Children's Fishing with Avon Anglers

On Saturday we were happy to have the Avon Anglers visit the Tinker Pond for our annual Children's Fishing event.

Sunfish, perch, and bullhead catfish were all caught and released.

Prizes were awarded for those who caught the largest fish, and hot dogs were roasted on the grill. We would like to thank everyone who came out and participated, especially the Avon Anglers. Without them this event would not be possible.

Tinker Nature Park T-Shirts were awarded to those who caught the biggest fish.

Another huge thanks to the Friends of Tinker Park who volunteered their time to help out!

Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration

This year we welcomed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to the nature center to help us celebrate Earth day. Greg Fuerst, a biologist who works for the DEC gave an intriguing presentation about black bears.

The crowd learned all about black bear biology, their movement back into the area, and how to live with them without conflicts.

Students from the RIT Environmental Science Department came out to do a pond and marsh life study. Snapping and painted turtles, leopard frog, caddisfly larva, dragonfly larva, mayfly larva, and giant water bugs were only a few of the many things found!

Examining tanks full of marsh life

What is that you're looking at?

It's a leopard frog!

A large turtle was found in the marsh...

Don't get too close, it's a common snapping turtle!

Children planted tomato plants to take home for a tomato garden. Planting your own produce and buying from local farms is one easy thing you can do to help the environment!

To celebrate Arbor Day, a White Oak tree was planted outside the nature center. As a crowd gathered, many joined in the fun of planting by throwing shovels of dirt onto the tree.

Volunteer Joe Donofrio helps Tim Pratt align the tree

Tree planting is fun for the whole family!

Thank You to all the volunteers, The Henrietta Foundation, Imagine It! Recycling, and everyone who came out this year!
